South Africans play online casino games daily

Plenty of action occurs on South African online casinos daily. Players from all over South Africa enjoy online casino games, cash games, like online slots and online table games.

Every country has their own laws and regulations around online gambling activities and this is no different in South Africa. For years the legality of online casinos in South Africa was straightforward and simply illegal.

Is online gambling in South Africa legal?

Recently South Africa has been pushing to pass the Remote Gambling Bill a bill that allows South African players to make use of and enjoy online casino gaming sites.

South African online gambling laws

All South African casino games players should follow the laws that are in place concerning online casinos in South Africa, no matter what is on offer by the casino site. South African players playing cash games online should only be using their South African credit card to deposit money into their online casino account.

Even though this is the case, there are other banking methods that online casinos will also accept instead of South African credit cards. These banking methods that are also available for South African players include services like Neteller or Skill, and also prepaid transaction cards like EcoCard.

With online gambling being permitted in South Africa, the government planned to offer 10 licenses to online casinos that would operate in South Africa. The ideas was that South African players would only use these casino sites. But as it turned out there were many international casino sites that still accepted online casino cash players from South Africa and as a result South African players have many more options than just 10 casino sites.

Online gambling is not entirely legal but at this time there are no severe consequences to accessing other casino sites, and it’s something that many South Africans do every single day. To date no South African has been targeted or prosecuted for gambling online.

Protect yourself as an online casino player in South Africa

To protect yourself, as a South African player, you should always verify if the online casino you choose is licensed and regulated and that it follows South African gambling laws, as individual casino licenses and regulations may not be the same as the laws in South Africa.

Players should always make sure they understand their local gambling laws and the penalties that could be incurred from using online casino sites. South African players can play online cash games at various online casinos and will soon have access to even more South African casino games as new gambling laws are implemented.

Democratic Alliance fighting for online gambling regulation

Currently the official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, are fighting to implement the "Remote Gambling Bill" with the ANC and NFP seeming to oppose the move to regulate online gambling in SA. Apparently their concerns seem to be the impact on the poorest of the poor and increasing white collar crime in the country, which is a bit of a nonsensical argument in our opinion.

Fortunately this is not the end of the debate around regulation and if the DA show the same tenacity they do with their other political debates & initiatives, they certainly will win the argument sooner than later.
